Insiders, Not Outsiders
We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial "outside agitator" idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds.Martin Luther King Jr., April 16, 1963, Letter from a Birmingham Jail
This week was a week ripe with leadership; we celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the inauguration of our new President, Barack Hussein Obama. It was a week when many were filled with hope, but many still seem to cling to fear. It is my hope that our new leader will truly act in accordance with the words professed by Dr. King.
Thanks to Juana Bordas and her reference to Dr. King’s quote above in her book Salsa Soul and Spirit: Leadership For A Multicultural Age for the reminder of what it will take for our leaders to reach higher ground.
