Hermann Hesse, Robert Greenleaf & Servant-Leadership
Ran across a couple of links that you may find of interest. One of Greenleaf's inspirations for his seminal work "The Servant as Leader" was Hermann Hesse's novel "The Journey to the East." An article and post from this past weekend make reference to its influence on Greenleaf.
Dr. Archie Carroll mentions it here (registration required) as he reflects on how servant-leadership can help organizations move beyond the Enron-type scandals that have plagued corporate life in recent years.
Nipun Mehta blogs about servant-leadership and gives a short quote from Hesse's novel.
I highly recommend reading Hesse's short novel for all of those who aspire to be a servant-leader. However, before rushing out to pick it up, take the time to first read Greenleaf's "The Servant as Leader" if you have not already done so. While there are a lot of great Servant-Leadership books out there, Greenleaf's work is the foundation of it all and necessary to put S-L into its proper context. You can order a copy of just this work for a mere $7 here. Or, if you can afford it, you can find a compilation of several of Greenleaf's writings in Servant-Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power & Greatness. It can be bought here.
Oh, I can't pass this up. If you've ever heard of James Hunter's The Servant, please check this out!
