The impact of the internet

The most recent edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education has an article (subscription required) surveying almost 2,400 professors regarding the educational impact of the internet. What did it say? 67% have seen the internet as a way of increasing communication with their students. The bad news? 42% saw the internet as decreasing the quality of students' work. And 44% saw plagiarism get worse since the rise of the internet.

My perception, at least here at our university, is that there are some who have not begun to use the power of the internet in the classroom. And those of us who have still struggle from time to time about its proper role. The times have indeed changed and we can only expect that change to continue.
